Château Haut Saint-Georges

In 1995, Frederic Van Der Kelen, then head of the Belgian brewery Haacht, an institution founded by his grandfather in 1898, acquired Château Haut Saint Georges. Since 2025, his son Baudouin Van Der Kelen has run the family group that owns this estate.

In the Haut-Saint-Georges vineyard, clay, limestone, gravel, ferrous sediments, and Saint-Georges loam produce a wine with an even more pronounced character than that of neighboring Saint-Émilion wines. The wine is produced from black grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Babernet Franc) planted on the estate’s south-facing slopes and averaging around thirty years old. During the harvest, the grapes are picked and sorted by hand, then vinified and aged in demi-muids to produce a velvety, ink-colored wine with a powerful nose: aromas of black fruits and ripe fruits with woody notes.
